Topic: "Islands in Bloom: Floral Diversity and Stewardship in the San Juan Islands"
Botanist Madrona Murphy will provide an overview of the plant communities and landscapes of the San Juan Islands, the deep traditions of Coast Salish stewardship behind these landscape, threats they face in a changing climate, and stewardship actions by Tribes, land managers, and gardeners to keep the islands in bloom.
Speaker Profile: Madrona Murphy

Madrona Murphy is the botanist and lab manager for Kwiaht, a non-profit research co-operative in the San Juan Islands with a mission of science for stewardship.
Madrona grew up on Lopez Island and has been working as a professional botanist in the San Juans for over 20 years. She specializes in plant-human interactions, including Coast Salish agricultural landscapes, heritage orchards, and invasive non-native plants.
Working with Kwiaht she has mapped plants on public lands throughout the San Juan archipelago, including the small islands that now make up much of the San Juan Islands National Monument.
